March Mom of the Month

Our mom of the month program honors moms for their efforts to lead healthy lifestyles, and gives us a chance to get to know them better at the same time!

March's featured "Mom of the Month" is: Marcie Longo!

Marcie has been attending Stroller Strides classes with her sweet daughter, Remie, since last summer, and is currently enrolled in Body Back. Plus, she is about to add the 10K Running Mamas program to her full plate! Talk about motivated! This mom is an incredibly hard worker and inspires everyone around her. Marcie has made great strides in fitness, motherhood, and life, and we are so thankful that she is an integral part of our group!

Join us in congratulating Marcie and read on to get to know her a little better!

Hometown (where you grew up): Manalapan, NJ

Current part of the Triangle that you live in: We've been in Apex for 5 months now. Before that we lived in Morrisville.

Education: BS in Natural Resources from NC State and a MS in Environmental Management from University of Maryland

Stroller Strides Member since: June 2014

Members of your Family: Dan, husband and Remie, 17 mos.

Tell us about your children: Remie is quite the charmer and has become really affectionate in the last few weeks. Lots of hugs and kisses from my girl! And, as long as it's not drop-in daycare, she usually waves to everyone and makes her presence known when she arrives anywhere with loud, friendly hello's! She turned every head in a restaurant once saying hello to each diner and we walked by. Remie is a very particular and cautious little girl, but once she gets going she is gone. Remie can already count to 10, loves the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (especially Minnie), and would be happy to sit in a room with a pile of books all day.

Current/previous Career: I was an environmental consultant for years before I went back to graduate school. The plan was to find something permanent in conservation program management before a baby, but eh... things don't always go as planned!

What was your childhood ambition? I've wanted to "save the planet" since the 4th grade.

What does motherhood mean to you? This is the hardest job I've ever had, but no doubt the most awesome. To me, motherhood is about knowing that you don't know it all and you're going to make mistakes. And it's ok. It doesn't matter how little sleep I've gotten, I will move a mountain if my baby needs me. I've shocked myself so many times in the last year with what I've been able to pull off in the sleep deprived condition I've been in. It's the drive of a Mommy, but I never realized what that meant and what it would feel like until the day I became one.

What is the furthest you have been from home? We took a family trip to Paris when I was a teenager.

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? One thing I always say is that I wish I had found Stroller Strides sooner after Remie was born. It's not just about the workouts, but the camaraderie, the advice, the laughs and the chance to get out of the house! Especially in those first few tough months, having something to do and somewhere to go can make a huge difference in your day! I've also gotten some great advice from SS Mamas, made some great friends, and of course, got back in shape too!

What is your favorite exercise? I love any exercise that has my butt feeling like it's been worked the next day! Butt burners! And I like jogging too.

What is your proudest moment? Other than finally being done after 18 hours of labor, and being proud of the job I've done taking care of my Remie... I got up from my desk and interrupted class when I was a Sophomore in High School to stand up to a bunch of bullies that were bothering a girl in our class. I was just a kid, but I remember feeling exhilarated and really proud.

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? I love concerts. I don't go to nearly as many as I used to, but I have an impressive list of new and classic musicians I've seen! I love Christmas time. It's just easier to get up in the morning and a fun time of year. And I love the beach. I love it in summer, and I love it in winter. I could sit on the beach, or walk on the beach for hours.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. I grew up in a house with parents that were Christian and Jewish. We put out a Menorah and Christmas tree during the holidays, but generally celebrated Christmas. And I am the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? I asked Dan and this is thought-out answer he gave me, "Marcie's greatest quality is easily her heart. She loves more deeply and cares more passionately about her family and friends than anyone I have ever met. She puts aside her own dreams and aspirations to provide a wonderful family environment at home, and I can see the love reflected in our daughter's eyes every day. Even through sickness or sleepless nights, Marcie still gives everything she has to our family, and she never complains or asks for recognition." I wasn't expecting him to make me cry!! *sniff, sniff*

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Don't set unrealistic goals for yourself! It takes time and everyone (and everyone's baby!) is different. Do make sure to make time for you though and if exercising is what you want to do, go for it! It makes us better Mommies and the workouts definitely help with stress management.
