February's Mom of the Month

Our mom of the month program honors moms for their efforts to lead healthy lifestyles, and gives us a chance to get to know them better at the same time!

February's featured "Mom of the Month" is: Erica DeShong!

Congratulations, Erica!

******************************

Erica and her daughter, Adelyn, have been members of Stroller Strides since last summer. Erica became famous because she attended class up to her very last week being pregnant with TWINS!! Adelyn became a big sister in mid January when her two sisters, Ella and Claire, were born! Erica and her family are adjusting to life as a 5-some, and they will soon be back in action with the Durham mamas!

Erica has made great strides in fitness, motherhood, and life, and we are so thankful that she is an integral part of our group! Join us in congratulating Erica and read on to get to know her a little better!

Hometown (where you grew up): moved around a lot prior to NC, but NC is home. Went to HS in Gastonia, NC

Current part of the Triangle that you live in: Durham ("SoDu")

Education (optional): UNC Chapel Hill

Stroller Strides Member since: Summer 2014

Members of your Family: Will (husband), 3 Daughters (wow still getting used to that 3 girls thing!): Adelyn-20mo, Ella and Claire - newborn twins, Sandy (golden retriever) and JT (German Shep)

Tell us about your children: Adelyn is the "busiest" and funniest 20mo. She keeps us on the move, on our toes, and laughing every day. She loves dogs (esp JT who we rescued when she and JT were both only 7mo), playing outside, reading with her daddy, and dancing. She is quickly settling into her role as big sister to newborn twins Ella and Claire born Jan 16.

Current/previous Career: Currently I am a SAHM. Most recently I worked as a financial analyst at Duke Raleigh Hospital before deciding to stay home with the girls.

What was your childhood ambition? to be a veterinarian

What does motherhood mean to you? Hmmm I am not sure I can properly define this. Motherhood has allowed me to discover part of me that I don't think I ever knew existed. It's a deep love that cannot be defined, only experienced. It's a love that fills you until you feel like your heart could burst. It's the most important thing I've ever done or will do.

What is the furthest you have been from home? I went to Isreal in 2007

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? Stroller strides has meant the world to me as I transitioned to life as a SAHM. It has given me structure to my week, motivation to get moving, a place to truly enjoy exercising, and most importantly - a community of AMAZING moms and kids Adelyn and I can call friends! Exercise was critical to a healthy pregnancy this go around. Even on my most uncomfortable days, stroller strides was worth dragging myself out the door to. I always felt better mentally, emotionally and physically once I arrived, started moving and catching up with fellow stroller striders. It also made me feel wonderful that Adelyn got to socialize as well during and especially after class. I am on a postpartum hiatus at the moment, but cannot wait to return - all 3 kids in tow!

What is your favorite exercise? Hmmm That's tough. I've been so hugely pregnant for so long that I haven't been able to fully participate in a lot of the exercises because I literally couldn't move. So I think anything I can physically do again will become a favorite!

What is your proudest moment? The birth of my girls (all of them)

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? Dogs (my own of course, but I also work with a rescue), a really good book (and time to read said book!), and of course - life w newborns means that naps go on my list of favorite things!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. I got to do a police ride along in college. I was in an unmarked car and the officers let me be "the bait" (from the car) in a minor drug bust.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? I cheated and asked - "kindness and unconditional love"

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Just get started. That is the hardest part.
